In last week’s post, we spoke briefly about the new year and why it is a great time to make improvements to your outdoor lighting system. This week, we’d like to continue on this track. Hopefully, you are still motivated to keep your New Year’s resolutions and haven’t let them slip by the wayside just yet. While all such resolutions are about improvement, perhaps yours isn’t so much about appearance. It could very well be about improving your habits and minimizing their impact on the world around you. You have decided you want to save – dollars and resources. By doing this, you can enrich your own life and not deplete the world around you too. You can be green in multiple ways! If you have decided to make 2014 the year of savings, consider applying that to your outdoor lighting system and choose LED.
So why is LED the best choice for savings? I’m sure you are already aware that it is a bit more to
install, and bulbs cost more than traditional halogen bulbs do. Just based on this information, installing an LED system or upgrading a halogen system to LED may not make sense. But the true cost effectiveness of LED outdoor lighting is reaped long term. LED bulbs have a longer life span than halogen bulbs, up to 10 times longer. What does that mean for you? It means that if you run your outdoor lighting system every night from dusk to midnight, your LED bulbs will last up to 25 years! So even though they cost more, they will not require as much maintenance, and you won’t need to replace them as frequently. They also consume less energy, as much as 80% less, and you will immediately begin seeing the difference on your electrical bill each month. It will take some time, but within three or four years, you will be able to recoup the additional costs associated with installing a new LED system through your energy savings. And then, those savings will continue, meaning that extra money you would be spending on energy can start to build up in your bank account. If you already own an Outdoor Lighting Perspectives halogen system, we can upgrade your system easily since our halogen fixtures can be retrofitted to burn LED bulbs.
Because LED outdoor lighting consumes so much less energy, it minimizes your impact on the environment. By consuming less energy, less energy must be produced, and the impact is felt all the way back to the raw material that is combusted to create that energy. Will one LED system change the world and fix environmental problems? Of course not, but each LED system that is added or converted takes just a little bit of waste out of the equation. And as more homeowners take that step, more impact is felt. If everyone conserved just a little, a big difference could be made. By making conscious decisions to consume less in all areas of life, we take responsibility for our world and truly can make a difference.
